ATHENS, Ga. – With Georgia’s season hanging by a thread, Carson Beck stepped up like never before. The Bulldogs’ playoff hopes were on the line, and Beck delivered in a way that redefined his role.
Where’s this Carson Beck been all season?
Better yet, if this quarterback who torched Tennessee’s defense on Saturday night is here to stay, can Georgia contend for a national title?
Anyone counting out No. 10 Georgia is mistaken.
Beck led the Bulldogs to a crucial 31-17 win over No. 4 Tennessee at Sanford Stadium, proving once again that Georgia thrives when doubt creeps in.
The Bulldogs (8-2) knew what was at stake: Beat Tennessee or kiss their College Football Playoff hopes goodbye. Another loss was too much to overcome.
“We knew it was win or go home,” said Georgia offensive lineman Jared Wilson.
Just days before, questions arose about whether Beck should be benched in favor of a backup. Beck had committed 14 turnovers in his previous six games, yet Kirby Smart stood firm, trusting his starter.
That faith paid off. Beck accounted for three touchdowns against one of the nation’s toughest defenses.
“I haven’t seen that Carson Beck in a couple weeks,” Wilson said. “It was great to have him back.”
Carson Beck Leads Georgia to Victory and Earns His Smile
Beck isn’t one for dramatic speeches, but when the coaches left the players to talk on their own early in the week, a few veterans spoke up.
Beck decided to speak his mind about Georgia’s critical situation following the tough loss to Ole Miss.
“Everybody understood the situation we were in,” Beck said. “Our backs were against the wall. The only way out was through whatever’s in front of you.”
What stood in front of the Bulldogs was a Tennessee defense that hadn’t allowed more than 19 points in a game all season.
Georgia put up 453 yards.
So much for Tennessee’s defense.
And so much for Georgia’s offensive struggles.
Beck sparked the turnaround.
Despite some dropped passes from his receivers, Beck found support in his offensive line, which provided stellar pass protection. He also worked in tandem with tight end Oscar Delp to carve through Tennessee’s defense over the middle.
“There was just a fire about us tonight,” Beck said. “It seemed like we were having fun.”
A week earlier, cameras caught Beck smiling on the sideline as Ole Miss dominated Georgia. The image of a quarterback grinning after such a rough game felt off.
But after this victory, the Bulldogs had earned their smiles.
While Beck spoke to reporters afterward, Wilson caught his eye, jumping and pumping his fists in celebration.
Beck smiled back.
This one felt good—and long overdue.
And it left Tennessee in a difficult spot.
What Georgia’s Win Means for the CFP Race and Is Tennessee in Trouble?
Georgia’s win likely moves the Bulldogs back into playoff contention, after being the first team out in Tuesday’s rankings.
If Georgia wins its next two games against Massachusetts and Georgia Tech at home, it will enter December on solid ground.
As for Tennessee (8-2)?
The Vols hung tough against a Georgia team that hasn’t lost at home since 2019. The Bulldogs didn’t pull ahead by two scores until late in the fourth quarter.
This loss doesn’t eliminate Tennessee from the playoff race, but it doesn’t secure their spot, either.
The Vols had a chance to take control of their postseason destiny with a win. Now, their fate rests with the unpredictable playoff committee. This defeat likely leaves Tennessee needing help to secure a playoff spot.
After last week’s loss to Ole Miss, the committee dropped Georgia nine spots to No. 12. Tennessee probably won’t see such a sharp decline, but expect a few spots lost.
The SEC remains unpredictable. Georgia looked flat last week but bounced back strong against Tennessee.
A quarterback throwing darts certainly helps.
Cool-Hand Carson Beck Steps Up at the Perfect Time for Georgia
Beck threw for two touchdowns and added another with a crucial third-down scramble. He evaded a pass rusher and powered into the end zone for the go-ahead score in the third quarter.
He finished 25 of 40 for 346 yards, his third-highest total of the season.
Most importantly, Beck committed no turnovers and kept his composure after Tennessee jumped to a 10-point lead in the first quarter.
Beck’s pinpoint throws reminded us why he was once considered a first-round NFL draft pick, before a midseason slump raised questions about his stock.
On this night, Beck played so well he reminded fans of Stetson Bennett IV, Georgia’s two-time national championship quarterback. Though Bennett lacked Beck’s NFL tools, he thrived in big moments. Two years ago, Bennett outdueled Tennessee star Hendon Hooker when the Vols were No. 1 in the CFP rankings.
This time, Beck outshined Tennessee’s highly touted redshirt freshman, Nico Iamaleava.
A Bennett-like performance?
“I guess you could say that,” Beck said.
Better put: It was a performance that reminded us of Beck’s true potential.
In a game-changing moment, Tennessee’s edge rusher James Pearce had Beck in his sights for a sack that could have ended the drive.
Beck juked past Pearce, sprinted into the end zone, and kept Georgia’s playoff hopes alive.
